Napoli

Naples you dirty thing, you. We’re ready for more pizza.

The amateur scratch graffiti lined spaces and poo on the streets set the tone for this city. Still, Naples is a favorite port for cruise ships. It’s also a favorite for the ship’s crew members to disembark at because it’s easy to get into and around town.

Last time we were here we did a short jaunt out of town to Pompeii. Today we’re going to hang around this gritty dirty town to walk its streets, get pizza from its source and see some of its sights. Knowing that Napoli is easily accessible from port, we hung around just inside the ships last gates safe from the taxi hawkers and planned out our attack.

For 1.1€ pp we jumped into the metro and went up to the Naples National Archeological Museum, which was to be the starting point for the Rick Steve’s walking tour. Being that it’s located slightly uphill, it would let us mostly walk downhill from there.

Inside were Greek and Roman statues…

Mosaics, including this one of chicken fighting. I recall seeing mosaics on the ground of some homes while visiting Pompeii

They even had an over 18 years of age room of sexual art, basically it noted that although embarrassing to display, sex is still a reality.

Here’s a caring relief of a Pompeii woman who was buried alive with a dress wrapped around her waist.

Afterwards we began or walk through the Galleria Principe di Napoli mall. I noticed myself looking over my shoulders more often than in other cities.

The streets of Napoli are full of tag graffiti.

June found a Sunday mass along the way and so the rest of us hung around the entry like a gang of well-dressed beggars across from a woman asking for money who was joined by 3 other companions who gave me dirty looks every so often. Turns out they were waiting to hang out in our spot across the doorway. As soon as we left, they moved in.

One of our main goals was to shovel cheap beautiful pizza down our throats. I held out from ordering from the many street vendors along the way…

…for this place.

Wth? The horde was ridiculous at around 50 people or so spilling out onto the street. Even at 2 minutes a pizza that was going to be a long wait. Since I’m an impatient individual, I asked June what our next best option was, which was this place.

Trianon was less crowded and had space to eat upstairs. At first we ordered a margherita and marsala pizza. At around 5 bucks apiece!

I found out the buffalo mozzarella was their 3rd most popular so we got one of those too.

After eating we went downstairs to pay while I watched one of the employees flatten out dough. The pizza here was delicious and the crust to pizza ratio was lower than Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Rome. The other crust however was flakier and had an even toastier flavor than that of Trianon. Still excellent. Beauty in simplicity.

Lunch completed our walking tour of Naples and from there we headed back to the boat by foot and metro … but first, gelato!

Since we boarded higher up we were right at Bellini level on 6. What a nice coincidence!
